For over a millennium, the art of soap-making in Nablus has thrived. During the Crusades, the city gained fame for its exceptional soap quality, with legends suggesting that the method was brought back to Europe, influencing the soap-making industry in Marseille. By the 14th century, local families took the reins of this thriving industry, turning Nablus into the Middle East’s soap production center. At its peak, the city exported to regions as far as Europe, becoming the economic and cultural capital of Palestine. Unfortunately, after enduring challenges from British and Zionist occupations, only two soap factories remain today.
