Antique Palestinian Tatreez Cushion Cover

Genuine fragments of antique Palestinian dresses, preserved and brought together in a new creation.

These cushion covers began with an idea by Sa’ad, a Palestinian merchant in Jerusalem: to collect old traditional Palestinian dresses featuring hand embroidery, some more than 100 years old, in order to preserve their embroidery and give it a new life.

Sa’ad then entrusts these textiles to Ibrahim, a Palestinian artisan from the mountainous region surrounding Al-Khalil (Hebron). Ibrahim carefully selects, cuts and assembles different fragments of tatreez to create each cushion cover.

The tatreez used here is therefore neither reproduced nor simply inspired by antique designs: every embroidered section comes from an actual old Palestinian dress.

The different fragments brought together within a single piece reveal the richness of Palestinian textile heritage, combining geometric motifs, floral compositions, colours and embroidery techniques in a contemporary object designed to be used and preserved.

Because Ibrahim works with existing antique textiles, no two compositions are exactly alike. The motifs, colours and their arrangement may therefore show slight variations compared with the photos. Each cushion cover has its own combination of embroidery and is a one-of-a-kind piece.

Placed on a bed, armchair or sofa, it brings a genuine fragment of Palestinian textile heritage into the home while giving these historic embroideries a new purpose.
