In his workshop in Jerusalem’s Old City, Ala’ handcrafts this sterling silver 925 pendant in the shape of Palestine. Across its surface, he engraves in Arabic calligraphy one of Mahmoud Darwish’s most celebrated lines:
« على هذه الأرض ما يستحق الحياة »
“On this earth, there is that which deserves life.”

When poetry becomes jewellery
Land, exile, memory and belonging are recurring themes throughout Mahmoud Darwish’s work. This line comes from his poem On This Earth (على هذه الأرض), in which he evokes the things that, despite everything, make life worth living.

Handcrafted in Jerusalem’s Old City
Each pendant is individually made by Ala’, a Palestinian jeweller based in Jerusalem. From shaping the silhouette to engraving the Arabic calligraphy and applying the finishing touches, the piece is handcrafted from hallmarked sterling silver 925.
A matching sterling silver 925 chain is included. For those who prefer warmer tones, the necklace is also available with a gold-plated finish.
