A contemporary keffiyeh combined with genuine pieces of antique Palestinian embroidery.

In his workshop in Aida Refugee Camp in Bethlehem, Akram has transformed a lined keffiyeh into an elegant triangular shawl, then carefully added fragments of tatreez taken from antique Palestinian dresses.

The traditional embroidery is entirely handmade and comes from dresses over 60 years old. By incorporating these original embroidered pieces into a new creation, Akram gives the textile a new life while preserving the craftsmanship of the original embroidery.

The colourful tatreez borders contrast beautifully with the black-and-white keffiyeh pattern and highlight the triangular shape of the shawl.

This is a one-of-a-kind piece: only one example of this design is available.

Cold hand wash recommended to preserve the antique embroidery. Do not rub the embroidered areas. Do not tumble dry. Allow to dry naturally while laid flat. Do not iron directly over the embroidery.

Behind the Product

Bethlehem - Artisan

Akram

Akram Al-Wa'ra is a Palestinian artisan from Aida refugee camp, near Bethlehem. Trained as an engineer, he creates unique pieces by transforming, among other materials, tear gas canisters fired at the camp by the occupying army, as well as nobler materials such as olive wood, into jewelry and handcrafted objects — symbols of resilience and hope. Through his work, he preserves Palestinian craftsmanship while sustaining his workshop and his family.
