Two thousand years ago, this glass was part of an everyday object. Today, it has been given new life as a unique ring, handcrafted in Jerusalem’s Old City.
This adjustable ring features an authentic fragment of ancient Roman glass from Palestine, dating back approximately 2,000 years. Carefully selected by Ahmad, a Palestinian jeweller based in Jerusalem’s Old City, the fragment is set by hand in sterling silver 925.
During the Roman period, glass was used to make a wide variety of everyday objects, including vases, perfume bottles, small flasks and other vessels. Over time, some of these objects broke and their fragments became buried beneath the earth. Pieces of ancient glass have since been discovered during archaeological excavations in Palestine, after nearly two millennia of history.
Through prolonged contact with the earth, moisture and elements in the soil, Roman glass developed its distinctive natural patina. Over centuries, natural chemical transformations gradually altered its surface layers, creating iridescent reflections in shades that may include blue, green, turquoise, gold and violet.
These colours are not artificially applied: they are the result of time and natural elements. Each fragment therefore has its own shape, texture, patina and reflections that cannot be reproduced exactly.
In his workshop in Jerusalem’s Old City, Ahmad carefully selects each fragment for its distinctive characteristics, then handcrafts a sterling silver 925 setting adapted to its individual shape. His work preserves the ancient character of the glass while transforming it into contemporary jewellery, with the silver highlighting the fragment’s natural shades.
The adjustable setting allows the ring to be gently adapted to different finger sizes while maintaining its elegant handcrafted finish.
Each ring is a one-of-a-kind piece that cannot be reproduced. Only one is available: the ring shown in the photographs is the exact piece you will receive. Once sold, this ring will never be available again.
Wearing this ring means carrying a genuine fragment of history, transformed through the craftsmanship of a Palestinian artisan in Jerusalem. By choosing this creation, you directly support Ahmad and help sustain Palestinian craftsmanship.
Ancient Roman glass is delicate and should be handled with care. Avoid contact with water, perfume, cosmetics and household cleaning products. Gently polish the sterling silver 925 parts with a soft cloth suitable for silver, without rubbing the glass directly. Protect the pendant from impacts, friction and immersion to preserve its surface and iridescent reflections.
