Al Quds Mini-Mosaic Necklace

Hundreds of meticulous gestures to bring Jerusalem to life within just a few centimetres of stone.

This necklace depicting the Old City of Jerusalem (Al Quds) is created in Bethlehem by mosaic artists specialising in an exceptionally rare craft: micro-mosaic jewellery.

The workshop where it is made is Palestine’s only micro-mosaic workshop. Even internationally, very few artisans master the level of precision required to create such intricate compositions on such a small scale.

This is not simply a piece of jewellery decorated with stones: the composition itself is a genuine miniature mosaic, created entirely by hand.

An exceptionally meticulous process

To recreate Jerusalem on this scale, the artists work with tiny fragments of semi-precious stones. They carefully select the shades, prepare the fragments and meticulously assemble them one by one, gradually revealing the shapes, colours and details of the Old City.

At this scale, every fragment matters. Just a few millimetres can alter a line, a perspective or the balance of a colour. The precision required makes each piece a true miniature work of art.

The finished mosaic is then set into sterling silver 925, bringing together the intricate art of stone mosaic and traditional jewellery-making.

Nearly a week to create a single necklace

Creating just one piece requires nearly a full week of work.

This reflects the complexity of the process: where a design could simply be printed, painted or mechanically reproduced, these artists build the image fragment by fragment, entirely by hand.

The technique requires patience, precision and expertise developed over years of practice. It also explains why these creations cannot be produced quickly or in large quantities.

Each necklace carries the individual characteristics of the artist’s work and the natural stones used. Shades and certain details naturally vary from one piece to another, meaning no two mosaics are ever exactly alike.
